Gis a Job! The SME Dilemma
swarmBe is a name that is becoming widely known in the business arena. If you haven’t heard of us yet, you soon will.
As well as recruiting for larger companies, we also specialise in helping SME’s and employers recruiting for the first time, we understand what it is like having to do and be responsible for everything. There is not enough time in the day, and you could really do with some extra help, and you ask yourself “But how do I go about it?” “When am I going to get the time?” “Do I really understand what I am looking for?” “What are the legal requirements I need to know?”. Does that sound familiar?
I remember it well in my own businesses…… I felt completely naive and not wanting to let on this was my first experience in hiring staff, I made plenty of mistakes and most of them came back to haunt me, but that is another story…….
Now, being older and wiser, I wish I had known then what I know now. Having run businesses myself, it was very difficult putting trust into the hands of others when I didn’t know what I didn’t know myself. I mean how hard could it be? Wrong!!!!!
And this is part of the reason why swarmBe came into being.
According to merchantsavvy.co.uk (2018), the research from the department of Department for Business, Energy & Industrial Strategy, dictates that 99.9% of the 5.7 million businesses in Britain are SMEs and they generate 51% of all UK business turnover. When you drill down even further, micro-businesses (0-9 employees) represent 96% of all business in the private sector.

That said, when recruiting, the first and foremost objective is to plan for your employee growth. When every employee has to contribute to the growth and revenue of the company, recruiting Bob around the corner who happens to be a friend of the family is not always the best idea. Fine for the short term, but what happens if he does not have the ability to step up at the crucial moment?
Do you need staff to grow with your company or do you need the expertise right now? Always look for the long term and be certain about the skills and qualifications you require from your new employee. Speaking from experience, a bad hire can cost you dearly and have long lasting consequences.
At this point, you can be rest assured that swarmBe will take your business interests as serious as we take our own. You can be confident that we will open and honest and we do not base our decisions on what will bring in the most money.
The two biggest challenges for SME’s are usually premises and staff. As stated by startupdonut.co.uk (2018) , 64% of business owners underestimated their expenses for the first business year. On one hand you need to keep a lean-cost base, so your turnover to breakeven is less, but on the other hand underestimating your expenses can cause cashflow problems and unnecessary headaches. Planning in a contingency strategy is key.

Interestingly enough, executivegrapevine.com (2017), suggests that according to the REC (Recruitment & Employment Confederation), many employers and hirers are oblivious to the hidden costs of a bad hire. The accumulative costs of hiring, training, loss of productivity and the increase in the turnover in staff can be as high as 150% of the exiting employee’s salary.
Another worrying statistic from merchantsavvy.co.uk (2018), suggests SMEs in the UK lose more than £2bn every year due to late payments with roughly £14bn of payments still outstanding.
In respect of these statistics, we at swarmBe, understand the ups and downs of small business and have challenged the way modern recruitment agencies appear to operate.
We do not charge inflated package prices, nor do we have to answer to our shareholders, because we have none. We are open, honest, transparent, ethical and are here to listen and help, if cash flow is a problem, then we can even spread the cost over 6 months.
